What auto parts from China really cost

Everyone quotes a unit price. Almost nobody quotes the number that decides whether an order was worth doing, which is what the part costs sitting on your shelf ready to sell. This page breaks that number down so you can compare offers properly instead of comparing the first line of an email.

Why quotes disagree

Two prices for the same part are usually two different parts

When buyers show us three quotes that vary widely on what looks like an identical component, the gap is almost never a bargain hiding in plain sight. It is a specification difference nobody wrote down. A thinner friction material. A cheaper bearing inside the housing. A casting with less machining. Packaging that will not survive the second handling.

None of that is dishonest by itself. Chinese factories build to whatever grade the market asks for, and there is a legitimate buyer for most grades. The problem starts when you compare a mid grade quote against a budget grade quote as though they were the same purchase.

The variables

What actually moves the price of auto parts from China

Material grade

The single biggest lever on most parts. Friction compound, rubber compound, steel grade and coating thickness all show up in the price long before labour does.

Order volume

Price steps down at the quantities where a factory can run your order as one uninterrupted batch. The step is often sharper than buyers expect, which is why a slightly larger order can cost less per piece than a small one.

Tooling

If your part needs a dedicated mould or die, someone pays for it. On a first order that cost can dominate. Spread across a repeat programme it disappears, which is why tooling is worth discussing before you judge the price.

Certification

A factory holding IATF 16949 and running documented process control carries real overhead. Parts needing E mark, DOT or similar approval cost more because the approval itself costs money to hold.

Packaging

Plain export cartons are cheap. Printed retail boxes with your own branding, barcodes and part numbers are not, and artwork lead time is often longer than the production itself.

Raw material timing

Steel, aluminium and rubber move. A quote held for thirty days already has that risk priced into it, and a quote held for a week usually does not, which is part of why the shorter one looks cheaper.

The number that matters

Build the landed cost before you compare anything

Take the unit price and add the things that are certain to follow it. Inland transport to the port if you are buying EXW. Export documents. Sea, rail or air freight for your volume. Insurance. Duty at your own tariff rate against the correct HS code. Port and broker charges at your end. Final delivery to your door.

On small, light, high value parts the unit price dominates and freight barely registers. On bulky low value items such as body panels, radiators or exhaust components, freight and volume can matter more than the factory price, and the cheapest factory quote can quite easily produce the most expensive shelf.

This is also where consolidation earns its keep. Combining several suppliers into one shipment spreads the fixed costs of a shipment across far more pieces, and on mixed orders that saving frequently exceeds anything you would have won by grinding a factory down on unit price.

Where a cheap quote gets expensive later

  • Returns and warranty claims that eat the margin you thought you had won
  • A part that fits the catalogue but not the vehicle your customer drove in with
  • Cartons that arrive crushed, turning sellable stock into write offs
  • A wrong HS code that invites a customs query and holds your goods
  • Missing or inconsistent part numbers that make your own stock hard to manage
  • A supplier who cannot repeat the same specification on the second order

How we price work for you

We quote the grade you actually asked for and say plainly when a cheaper grade exists and who it suits. Our commission is agreed before the order and shown separately, so you can always see the factory price underneath it.

If a part is not worth importing at your volume, we will say so. Telling a buyer that four lines on their list should be bought locally costs us a little revenue and keeps the relationship, which is the better trade.

Good to know

Common questions about auto parts pricing

Are auto parts from China cheaper than buying locally?

On most service items bought in reasonable volume, yes, and often by a wide margin. On single pieces, very bulky low value items, or parts your local distributor is clearing at cost, the answer can easily be no. The landed cost calculation is what settles it, not a rule of thumb.

Why did my quote change since last time?

Usually raw material, sometimes exchange rate, occasionally freight. Factories that quote honestly move their prices when their inputs move. A supplier whose price never changes is often holding it by quietly changing the part instead.

Can you match a price I was given elsewhere?

We can tell you what that price is buying. Send it over with the specification and we will price the same grade properly. Sometimes we come in lower, sometimes we show you that the other quote is a different part, and either answer is useful.

Do I pay you or the factory?

You pay against one invoice and we settle with the factories. On multi supplier orders that is a great deal simpler than running separate transfers, and it means nobody gets paid in full until the goods have been checked.

What HS code applies to my parts?

It depends on the part and on your own country’s tariff. We put the code we expect on the quote so your broker can confirm it early, rather than discovering a different duty rate when the goods have already sailed.
